Course Description


BTEC Level 2 Safe and Effective Use of Restraint Equipment (Handcuff and soft-cuff). This specialist BTEC qualification is suitable for any staff member who may have to use handcuffs in the course of their job.

The BTEC Level 2 Safe and Effective Use of Restraint Equipment qualification provides the essential knowledge and understanding of the legal framework and the effective practical skills in how to use the equipment safely,

efficiently and legally.

The Handcuffing techniques taught are fully in accordance with current Police guidelines and are Home Office approved. This is a 1-day course in the safe and effective use of restraint equipment, including handcuffs and soft-cuffs.

It covers all the relevant laws, regulations, and guidance followed by practice in the application techniques. 

This is a one day course designed for individuals who are expected to use restraint equipment as part of their day to day duties. By the end of this one day course you will be able to define the primary reason for handcuffing, and also understand the medical implications of handcuffing including positional asphyxia, you will be confident of how to apply handcuffs to an aggressive subject, lock them and then demonstrate how to remove handcuffs correctly and ensuring you know the law concerning the use of handcuffs. This course will equip you to administer handcuffs safely.

This course provides a nationally recognised certified qualification.


Who should attend


This course is highly recommended for individuals who work in the Security Industry, Hospitality Sector, Hospitals and Healthcare. This could be a door supervisor to a close protection officer to a nurse. Handcuffing is a form of personal protection that can also be used as part of your operational role within the Industry. If you work with the public where situations arise where you have to extract, move or detain people then this course is ideal for you.  Typical roles include Door Supervisors, Civilian Enforcement Officers, Bailiffs, certain aspects of Nursing, Hospital/Hotel Porters, Security Organisations, Private Prison Officers, Border Forces, and Civilian Detention Officers.





We only use Instructors who are Qualified and hold a Level 3 Advanced Award in The Safe and Effective Use of Restraint Equipment and who are registered with the National Federation for Personal Safety. 


On the course, you will learn


  • Understand the primary reason for handcuffing

  • Understand the Health & Safety implications, including Sections 2 and 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

  • Regulation 3(1) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the requirements of PUWER as well as the implications of the new Health and Safety Offences Act 2008 and the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007

  • Understand the law in relation to reasonable force in Scotland

  • Understand the law, including compliance with: Section 3 (1) of the Criminal Law Act 1967, Common Law, Section 117 PACE and Articles 5, 3 and 2 of the Human Rights Act 1998

  • Understand other areas of guidance – if required – such as The Mental Health Act Code of Practice and NICE guidelines

  • Understand the medical implications of handcuffing, including positional asphyxia

  • Demonstrate how to apply handcuffs and soft-cuffs to a passive subject

  • Demonstrate how to apply handcuffs and soft-cuffs to an aggressive subject

  • Demonstrate how to remove handcuffs and soft-cuffs correctly


Having formal instruction and assessment in all of the above you will be able to evidence that you have had the training of a National Vocational Standard which will be of massive benefit to you should your competence and ability ever be challenged.

This is a 1-day duration course and on completion, all successful delegates will be awarded their Level 2 accreditation.




This course can be assessed either as a BTEC Level 2 Award licensed via the National Federation for Personal Safety or we can run it as an ‘in-house’ course.



Delegates taking part this course MUST already be trained in advanced restraint techniques.
